Honors Texts for World Literature (E5)
The Honors Track for World Literature is outlined in the study guide and involves additional reading and writing and an optional exam. Another way you can use the honors texts is if you have already read a focus text for a module, you may substitute an honors text.

The books linked below are the honors texts for World Literature, which is English 5 in the Excellence in Literature curriculum.

Honors: The Iliad by Homer

Honors: Oedipus Rex by Sophocles
Module 3
Honors: Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans by Plutarch
Module 4
Honors: Paradisio (Paradise) and/or Purgatorio (Purgatory) by Dante
I recommend reading the poem in the John Ciardi translation from New American Library or in the Anthony Esolen translation from the well-annotated Modern Library Series. You may want to get Dorothy Sayers’ translation (published by Penguin Classics) just for her commentary and notes, as you’ll find that she provides solidly Christian perspective on the text.
You may choose to also read Confessions by Augustine, as it’s an interesting contrast.
