To Ireland Sea Shanty sung by Bounding Main

The musical re-enactment group Bounding Main sings the sea shanty, “To Ireland.”

A sea shanty, also spelled chantey, or chanty, is a type of rhythmic work song. These songs were once sung to synchronize or pace labor on board merchant sailing vessels, though they could also be used simply to pass the time. Traditionally, the term “shanty” refers to a specific style of song belonging to this historical repertoire, though it can also refer to a “maritime work song” in general.
